Contextual Links Are The Best Links
Google has been trying for years to devalue paid links. These are links that people pay web site owners or text link brokers to place on sites. Google always said they could detect paid links, but in reality they couldn’t.
They have finally given up the pretense of being able to detect paid links, so they’ve decided to devalue all links on web pages that are navigational links or links found in the navigation areas of a web page. These areas are found at the top, on the side or at the bottom of a web page. These are also the areas that paid links are usually put.
What has increased in value to Google is contextual links. Google now will give a boost, a huge boost, to contextual links. Links found in the actual content of the page – not in the navigational areas. When we do the 500 Free Links each month for our Coaching Club members, we put a contextual link within the content we create and distribute.
In the above paragraph you can see that the phrase Coaching Club is a hyperlink. This is a contextual link.
You can do this yourself by linking keyword phrases within the content of your web site or blog to relevant pages of your website. This is internal linking and Google counts it. This will help your website increase in ranking and its something you have complete control over.
Contextual links can also be put in articles submitted to certain article directories and blogs. They can be put in press releases submitted to certain press release directories. You can also put them in the description of videos that you submit to YouTube and other video directories.
You can still do paid links, but only deal with web site owners (not with a link broker) and ask them for contextual links.

Here we go! Leave it to google to change it up and confuse things!! I’m sure others will follow suite. I try to do all contextual links, however there are times when it’s not allowed and they use regular linking, so this means that all the work people have done up to now in regards to uncontextual links is going to be disregarded? Not a happy camper!
Michael Gravette
No, your links won’t be disregarded. Just not valued as highly as before.
It’s still good to get all kinds of links. All links still count. But, contextual links seem to count the most.

The internal links are good and necessary, but contextual links to your web pages on other websites is better.

I agree that contextual links are the best kind, but I’m not so sure Google has completely given up trying to detect them. Also, many paid link opportunities that I have seen are placed in the context of blog posts, articles, etc. I would completely ignore paid links (they can get you banned from Google) and focus on natural link growth. Generating 100+ links overnight for most websites isn’t natural, and Google knows it. But plunking along at one, two, five per day seems much more natural, and less likely to be flagged by Google as possible paid links.
Pepper Sprays
Thanx for the helpful hints. Yes I agree that slowly generating links is much better. How will it affect those who are naturally having 1-5 links placed per day with a company? Those won’t be contextual correct?

What kind of self defense is there for Google?
You create pages and pages of content and the links are devalued because of their position.

Fake Surveillance Cameras
It seems that even after reading this alot of people still don’t get it. For this comment, (my name) Fake Surveillance Cameras, is the link. In an article, for example, you would use that keyword phrase in a sentence and make it the link.
Michael Gravette
You are exactly right. Too many people are missing the opportunity to get a link with their keyword in the anchor text.

Thanks Mike, I know this is an older post but I am trying to catch up. My domain providor had made some changes and I started to procrasinate on my sales and marketing, because of the economy they had to cut back on how much content they can allow you to put in, I just got upgraded to a premium site as well as with a new domain name http://www.gastonsecurityproducts.net now I am not procrasinating, been working on adding content to my website since I upgraded, slow going seeing that I am the IT guy, as well as the sales person, the owner, ok I wear a lot of hats , lol…
